Frequently asked questions

The questions moms ask most — answered.

Do I need to prepare anything before a consult?

No — just come as you are. We'll start from wherever your feeding journey is right now. If you're pumping, it helps to bring your flange size and a rough schedule.

Do you take insurance?

Willow currently accepts Anthem Blue Cross (virtual prenatal program), Cigna, and HSA funds. She is actively credentialing with most insurance agencies — expected completion by end of 2026. Cash pay is always welcome, and you'll receive a receipt you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.

Can you help if I'm exclusively pumping?

Absolutely — pumping plans, flange fit, and supply troubleshooting are a big part of what we do.

How soon will I feel better from a clogged duct?

With the right care, many moms see improvement within 24–48 hours. We'll give you a clear plan and check in on your progress.

Do you offer virtual visits?

Yes — video consults are available for families anywhere, with the same evidence-based care.

What if it's urgent?

If you have a fever over 101°F, spreading redness, or flu-like symptoms, contact your doctor right away — don't wait for an appointment.

What's your cancellation policy?

Life with a newborn happens. Appointments can be rescheduled free up to 24 hours before your visit.

Is my information private?

Yes — your health information stays between you and your consultant. We never share your data.

What is trauma-informed lactation care?

Trauma-informed care means I recognize that birth trauma, medical trauma, and past experiences can affect feeding — and I create safety in every consult. This includes choice, control, clear explanations, and never pushing a parent past what feels okay. It doesn't mean therapy — it means feeding care that sees the whole person.

Do you offer postpartum doula support?

Yes — in addition to lactation consults, Willow offers in-home postpartum doula support across Central Oregon. This is for those first exhausting weeks when you wish you could take your lactation consultant home with you. Feeding help, newborn care guidance, and a calm, knowledgeable presence in your home.

What happens during a first consult?

We start with your story — birth experience, feeding journey, what's working, what's hard. Then we observe a full feed (or pumping session), assess latch and positioning, and address any physical issues. You leave with a written plan and a follow-up check-in. Most consults last 60-90 minutes.

Can you help with tongue or lip ties?

Yes — I screen for tongue and lip ties during every consult. If a tie is suspected, I'll explain what I'm seeing and refer you to a qualified provider (ENT or pediatric dentist) for evaluation and revision. I also provide pre- and post-revision feeding support, which is critical for success.

What areas do you serve?

In-home visits across Central Oregon — Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, and surrounding areas. Virtual consults are available for families anywhere in the United States.

What's the difference between an IBCLC and a lactation consultant?

IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the highest level of lactation certification — requiring hundreds of clinical hours, a rigorous exam, and continuing education. Not all "lactation consultants" are IBCLCs. Willow is an RN, IBCLC, and Certified Trauma Specialist with 28+ years of nursing experience.

Can you help with low milk supply?

Yes. Low supply is one of the most common concerns I address. We'll do a pre/post weight to see what baby is actually transferring, assess latch and positioning, review your pumping routine if applicable, and build a personalized plan. Most supply issues are manageable with the right support.

Can you help with oversupply or forceful letdown?

Absolutely. Oversupply and forceful letdown (OALD) can cause choking, gas, fussiness, and clogged ducts. We'll use positioning, block feeding (when appropriate), and other strategies to slow your flow and protect your supply while keeping baby comfortable.

Do you offer prenatal lactation planning?

Yes — I offer private prenatal lactation classes. We cover feeding positions, pumping basics, what to expect in the first weeks, normal newborn behavior, and a personalized plan for your family. Many families find that preparing before baby arrives makes the early weeks much less stressful.

Do you provide follow-up support?

Yes — every consult includes a follow-up check-in, because feeding changes day to day. I'm also available for additional follow-up visits as needed. Some families benefit from weekly check-ins in the early weeks; others just need one visit. We'll find the right rhythm for you.

Can you help with weaning?

Yes. Whether you're weaning at 6 months, 12 months, or 2+ years, I can help you do it gradually and comfortably — without engorgement, blocked ducts, or emotional distress. We'll build a step-down plan that works for you and your child.

Do you work with NICU families?

Yes — I have experience supporting families with NICU stays, premature babies, and complex medical needs. These situations often require pumping, supplemental feeding, and a slower, more careful approach. I can help you build a plan that fits your baby's needs and your goals.
