Why Stress Makes Clogged Ducts Worse — and What to Do About It
When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones don't just make you feel awful — they physically affect milk flow and can make a clogged duct harder to clear.
In my 27 years as an RN and now as an IBCLC and trauma specialist, I've seen that the moms who clear clogs fastest aren't the ones doing the most massage. They're the ones who also address their nervous system.
Practical steps: lower the lights, breathe slowly for 2 minutes before feeding, use ice (not heat), and ask for help. You don't have to do this alone.
If a clog persists or you develop a fever, that's when in-person care matters. I serve families across Bend and Central Oregon, in-home or by video.
