How to Measure Your Flange Size (It's Probably Wrong)
Most pumps ship with a 24mm flange, but that size fits only some mothers — and a wrong fit quietly cuts output and can cause pain. Measure the diameter of your nipple at the base (not the areola), then add about 2–4mm to find your flange size. If your areola gets pulled far into the tunnel, or pumping hurts, your flange is probably too small.
Why size matters
The flange is the funnel that fits over your nipple while pumping. Too small means the nipple rubs against the tunnel walls — painful, and it restricts flow. Too large pulls too much areola in, so milk removal is less effective. Either way, output drops and you might blame your supply. It's often the flange, not you.
How to measure
- Before a feed (nipple at resting size), measure the diameter of your nipple at its base.
- Add roughly 2–4mm to that number.
- That's your starting flange size. Example: an 18mm nipple → try a 21mm flange.
Nipples can also change size over the first weeks, so it's worth re-measuring after a few weeks.
Signs your flange is wrong
- Pumping hurts or leaves sore, pinched nipples
- A lot of areola is pulled into the tunnel
- Output is low despite frequent pumping
- The nipple looks white, creased, or flattened after pumping
